5 Tips For Avoiding Gluten at a BBQ or Buffet Gathering
5 Tips for staying healthy at a BBQ or other buffet type gathering. Learn from Dr. Doherty hard won experience. She learned all these the hard way, and made the mistake of going hungry to a particularly depressing BBQ where all she could eat was carrot sticks!
- Have your food grilled on tinfoil, you don’t know now many buns and gluten based marinades have contaminated your hosts grill. (This may be true for your own grill too!)
- Don’t go hungry, have a snack before you go anywhere so if there are only limited offerings you won’t be starving and tempted to push the envelope on what might be safe for you to eat.
- Be first in line for a buffet and don’t go back for seconds. You avoid dropped crumbs and swapped contaminated spoons between dishes this way. If you are paying attention it is easy to naturally be one of the first in line without making a big deal about it. Find out in advance what is safe for you.
- Bring a gluten free dish to share that is safe for you and that can double as your meal if nothing else seems appetizing or uncontaminated. (This months Broccoli Salad recipe is perfect for this)
- Have nuts or some kind of bar as back up in your car or purse if you are still hungry and have limited food options at the gathering. Being hungry makes it harder to be sociable and not feel deprived surrounded by food that looks good but that you can’t have.
