6 Reasons to Stop Taking a One-a-Day Multivitamin
The key to that sentence is “one-a-day”, meaning, one pill per day. Read on to find out some of the hidden problems of many national brand multivitamins.
1) Polyethelene glycol- AKA the drug Miralax, is in the fine print in many supplements, including one-a-day multis. If you had diarrhea as a symptoms, then the last thing you need is to be taking is a laxative in your multivitamin. Just like with gluten, read the labels on your supplements as well. Needless to say, none of our supplements contain this.
2) Lots of sugar- Many multis in tablet form contain multiple forms of sugar; dextrose, glucose and corn starch are very common. You don’t need sugar in your multivitamin; I think it is safe to say no one in America is struggling with trying to find ways to get sugar into their diets.
3) Not enough calcium- Calcium, especially the more absorbable, chelated kinds, like calcium citrate, is very large and can’t be crammed into one pill. The average one-a-day only has 50mg of calcium when most people need around 1000mg a day.
4) Critical nutrients missing- many one a day multis lack minerals like selenium, copper, chromium and others. Again, it is a space issue, you can only fit so much in one pill. Although, wouldn’t it be better to leave out the sugar and add more nutrients?
5) The worst forms of the vitamins and minerals- One-a-days often contain undesirable forms of many vitamins, typically vitamin E and minerals in their salt forms, which are less absorbable than chelated forms (where a mineral piggybacks on an amino acid for better absorption).
6) Dividing doses improves absorption- Many nutrients compete with each other, especially minerals. Taking your vitamins more than once a day improves your chances of absorbing the full spectrum of nutrients which is especially important if you are newly diagnosed or eat a lot of processed foods. Our original Twice Daily C-liac packs were designed to take advantage of this. Dr. Doherty eventually made the Once Daily packs since many people couldn’t remember to take both packs!
